Is Performance Coaching for You?
The world is a very busy place, not that most people realize it. In fact, we’re often so focused on staring down at our mobile devices or laptops that we fail to recognize much of anything happening around us. For entrepreneurs and executives, this problem is even more pronounced.
As the person ultimately responsible for the success of your business, the modern entrepreneur is constantly juggling responsibilities and straining to get as much work done as possible during the day. My job as an performance coach is to keep my fiercely brilliant and ambitious clients functioning at peak power. I will get you back on your game, and refocused so you can regain your peak skills. Reframing, confrontation, cheerleading, breathing techniques, changing posture — all of these can rapidly accelerate performance when used correctly.
Performance coaching is about managing energy — teaching leaders to utilize their physical, emotional, mental and spiritual energy for maximum stamina and effectiveness. Performance coaching is not therapy. It is not about salvaging under-performers. It’s not even always about making people feel good — in fact, often it’s tough medicine. But it is delivered in the context of a relationship where there is high trust and mutual respect. To be successful, it requires a high degree of commitment from both participants. And it has to show results! This is not touchy feely stuff, but bottom-line boosting performance enhancement.
The General Approach to Performance Coaching
There are two general approaches to performance coaching: the cognitive-behavioral angle, in which thoughts are used to change behavior, and the psychodynamic angle, in which non-conscious thoughts and feelings tangentially related to one’s performance in the market are uncovered and addressed.
My approach is a combination of both and it is not all about positive thinking, because I don’t believe in that. I don’t believe you should go to your garden and chant, “There’s no weeds, there’s no weeds, there’s no weeds”, and think that that’s going to solve something. I’m a believer in find the weed and rip it out.
Nothing is more critical than focus. If you fail to reach your goal, it is because somewhere along the way your focus was “broken.” Focus is power; a focused person can accomplish more than 100 individuals who are merely interested. Anybody can make excuses and say “you have to be lucky to succeed,” but the truth is, we all have the power to succeed, however we’re all not willing to do what it takes to succeed (that’s the difference). Most prefer to sit on the sideline, or play Monday morning quarterback.
“One reason so few of us achieve what we truly want is that we never direct our focus; we never concentrate our power. Most people dabble their way through life, never deciding to master anything in particular.”
